Q: We have access to so much news on a daily basis. What kinds of information do you consume at the start of your day?
A: I get 100% of my news from the Internet, specifically Twitter, Reddit, and various news websites. I’ve curated whom I follow on Twitter to be only what I care about (breaking news, tech, pop culture sports), and Reddit is the best place to find unfiltered news and current topics.
Q: How do you use social media?
A: I primarily use social media as a tool to consume content, communicate with friends, and promote Huckle. I use SnapChat to send and receive photos and videos with friends, Huckle to talk directly with my Twitter followers, and Reddit and Twitter for news and community.
Q: How has social media changed your life?
A: I have the interesting perspective of having started working at almost the same time as the advent of social media, and that has shaped everything I’ve done professionally my entire career. I’ve never had a job that wasn’t heavily social-media weighted, and that’s what led us to develop Huckle. There’s nothing out there like our app, and it fills a need that I had when working with celebrities and brands. I wanted to figure out a way to have real conversations on Twitter, and I’m proud to say that Huckle does that.
Q: Do you think social media has enhanced or diminished our personal relationships?
A: Like everything else in life, there are pros and cons of social media and I’d rather live in a world with it than live in a world without it. We built Huckle to give people the ability to get to know their social media followers and put faces to names in an actual conversation, which I think is a big step forward from simply broadcasting what’s on your mind.
Q: What organizations, brands or personalities do you follow? What makes them worth following?
A: I follow a lot of people and brands on social media, but some of my favorites are insiders that can take me behind-the-scenes of my favorite athletes, musicians, and more. I also like following influencers in technology, like founders of some of my favorite companies. Marc Andreessen, Ben Horowitz, Adam Schefter, Tim Ferriss, and blogs for my favorite teams such as Music City Miracles and Golden State of Mind.
Q: What kinds of posts spark your interest?
A: Definitely posts with media – images, videos, and gifs. If a social media post doesn’t have something visual, then it’s rare it will catch my attention. I also look at how much engagement a post has received (likes/re-tweets) to be an indicator of how much it’s worth checking out.
Q: What is/are your favorite social media platform/s and why?
A: You mean other than Huckle? Twitter, Reddit, and SnapChat – Twitter is the best way to discover what’s going on in the world right now (and now with Huckle you can start conversations there), Reddit is the origin of all popular content on the internet before it’s popular plus the community is amazing, and SnapChat is the best (and most fun) way to send and receive photos and videos with friends.
Q: Favorite hashtag or one you’d like to see?
A: #1LetterWrongMovie – change one letter of a movie title to completely change the plot of the movie – pretty funny!
Q: What advice would you give to a brand about how to get started with a social media program or make their existing one more effective?
A: Engage your followers on a daily basis, and be sure you are having two-way conversations. Always post with media or emojis, and be consistent with your branding, style, and posting frequency.
Q: If you could follow any historical figure on social media, who would it be?
A: Mitch Hedberg, Twitter was built for his style of comedy. But he’s not really a “historical” figure, so if I had to pick someone more historically relevant I’d go with 70’s/80’s/90’s Steve Jobs.
Q: Cone, cup, or straight from the container?
A: Cup unless they’re known for their cones, and if I am eating straight from the container that means I most likely bought it from a store and it won’t be my favorite ice cream anyway.
Q: Favorite flavor?
A: Vanilla. It gets a lot of hate but it’s the best flavor because it is the perfect complement for any topping (which would be Reese’s peanut butter cup).
