Q: We have access to so much news on a daily basis. What kinds of information do you consume at the start of your day?
A: I read the LA Times (in print even!) every day, also NY Times online and several magazines such as LABJ, People, and Elle. I also check my social feeds first thing – Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn. Occasionally I’ll review Yahoo’s headlines but that has become mostly sensational, celebrity-focused press.
Q: How do you use social media?
A: I use it every day to stay connected to people I’ve met over the years, or been friends with since I was little. I use it to do qualitative research and also learn as much as I can about someone I’m about to meet with. I use it to share photos with friends and family and sometimes I’ll use it to share sarcastic and/or inspirational posts. I like the fact that I can stay connected to so many people at any given time. That wasn’t possible before social media.
Q: How has social media changed your life?
A: Well it’s definitely added hours into the day. And I also feel like I know some people better than I probably do. I keep up with far more trivial information than I ever used to, but I enjoy getting these glimpses into other people’s lives. I also think it makes me better at my job to have this additional insight and information – both from people and from brands/companies.
Q: Do you think social media has enhanced or diminished our personal relationships?
A: I think it’s created new challenges for the closest personal relationships but for friendships in general I believe it’s an enhancement. I’ve met people all over the world in my various travels. I met a group of girls in Bali at a Surf Camp eight years ago and we still stay in touch via social media. That just wasn’t possible when I was growing up and I’m thankful we have this platform!
Q: What organizations, brands or personalities do you follow? What makes them worth following?
A: Oh boy. Probably way too many… I love following fashion brands on Instagram. I follow all my favorites – and definitely some celebrities too. Chrissy Teigen is by far one of my favorite Instagram celebrities. And shoe brands on Instagram are too much fun – Christian Louboutin, Brian Atwood specifically. I also follow lots of musicians – particularly my favorite band, Bon Jovi. On Facebook I follow more authors, columnists and comedians – Anna Quindlin, Anne Lamott, Elizabeth Gilbert, Glennon Melton, Nicholas Kristof, Andy Borowitz – just a few of my favorites. I love feeling like I’m getting to know them beyond just their printed word. I’ve seen pictures of their families, read their philosophical musings and feel like we are friends now.
Q: What kinds of posts spark your interest?
A: Anything that is deeply personal and very honest.
Q: What is/are your favorite social media platform/s and why?
A: It’s a tie between Facebook and Instagram. It used to be Twitter but there just isn’t that much useful information there. It used to be THE place for breaking news and such a great platform to follow live events. I like how Facebook includes news now and I love how visual and fun Instagram is.
Q: Favorite hashtag or one you’d like to see?
A: #makemarchmatter (we just ran a month-long campaign in March called “Make March Matter” and we raised $1.3M for children’s health and Children’s Hospital LA)
Q: What advice would you give to a brand about how to get started with a social media program or make their existing one more effective?
A: They need to be on social media, engaging and growing their followers in an authentic way. If a brand or individual never or rarely posts, comments or likes, then all of a sudden out of nowhere they post a request of all their followers, it comes across as insincere. You have to give before you get.
Q: If you could follow any historical figure on social media, who would it be?
A: Cleopatra. I bet she’d have some fun posts!
Q: Cone, cup, or straight from the container?
Q: Favorite flavor?
A: Cake Batter
